Where Everybody Knows Your Name

I love this song.  I love the idea behind the song.  There is something so inviting about a place where everyone knows your name; a place where the folks that are there, light up when you walk through the door.  That’s the kind of place we wanted to create when we opened Cadence almost a year ago.  We wanted to create that “third place” away from work and home, where random strangers could walk inside, and the people on the other side of the counter would acknowledge them by name, and perhaps even go so far as to start making a drink for them before they even order.

I’m pretty confident that we’ve been successful in creating that kind of place, and I think that folks like Ed, Peterson, Brian, Jason, Chase, Holly, Leah, Tina, Matt, Bill, and countless others truly feel at home when they come in.

I don’t know what work environment you have, but I do know one thing that could truly revolutionize your environment.  Get to know the names of the people around you.  When you go to the grocery store and see the clerk’s name on their name tag, call them by name, “How are you today, Julie?”  Ask the name of the gentleman that you share an elevator with each day going to your office.  Let someone know today that they matter, simply by acknowledging them by name.  For some folks that may be the only time they hear someone say their name with warmth and acceptance.  After all, there is something inside of all of us that makes us say, “sometimes you wanna go where everybody knows your name.”
